Gotta Brain... Getta Helmet

Gotta Brain... Getta HelmetOpportunities Unlimited donates bike helmets to Sioux City 2nd graders as part of the “Gotta Brain… Getta Helmet” program.

Each year through this brain injury prevention program OU strives to educate children and provide the safety equipment they need to protect their brains.

As part of our "You've Been Ticketed" partnership with the Sioux City Police Department and Sioux City Dairy Queens, Opportunities Unlimited's Gotta Brain…Getta Helmet Program is giving away a youth bicycle helmet each week until the end of August. Just follow this link to register to win this week's drawing!

In addition to the helmet give away - OU staff and local teachers provide valuable preventative curriculum to the children highlighting the importance of protective equipment during recreational and athletic activities. In 2014 through the “Gotta Brain… Getta Helmet” program, the Sioux City Blue Zone Initiative, and various giveaways, OU provided more than 350 bike helmets to children in need.

OU would also like to thank our generous partners, Scheels All Sports and Siouxland Cyclists who help make these programs possible.

How You Can Help:

  • Donate helmets: We need Youth (8+) helmets.
  • Make a financial contribution - (100% of your donation will be used to purchase helmets for Siouxland youth).

While Opportunities Unlimited strives for excellence in rehabilitative services for individuals who have sustained a Brain Injury, we also promote education and prevention. The statistics regarding BI are quite shocking:

  • Each year 475,000 children in the US sustain a BI
  • BI is the leading cause of death and disability among youngsters
  • Each year in the United States, an estimated 1.7 million people sustain a BI. Of those, 52,000 will die and another 80,000-90,000 will experience the onset of a long-term disability associated with their BI.
  • US citizens are five times more likely to sustain a BI than multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, HIV/AIDS and breast cancer combined.

Checks may be made payable to Opportunities Unlimited or to contribute by credit card. To arrange a helmet donation or for any other inquires about the "Gotta Brain... Getta Helmet" program call 712-277-8295.
